BPH Global Ltd (ASX: BP8) has announced the successful completion of an R&D program with Singapore Polytechnic to develop two innovative green seaweed kefir beverages. The project, overseen by the company's R&D consultant Gaia Mariculture, involved the development of a probiotic kefir beverage containing live bacteria cultures to promote gut health, as well as a pasteurized postbiotic kefir beverage that retains the health-promoting metabolites without live bacteria, offering a longer shelf life. Both beverages use Caulerpa lentillifera (Seagrape) extract as the core fermentation material. Multiple formulations were refined through sensory evaluations, resulting in appealing color, flavor, and texture profiles. The R&D work confirmed the feasibility of producing these seaweed-based kefir beverages and highlighted their potential health benefits, including supporting blood sugar management, digestion and gut microbiome balance, and immune function. The company will now progress the probiotic and postbiotic beverage concepts towards potential market entry, including safety and shelf-life testing, consumer acceptability trials, regulatory compliance, and securing commercial partnerships.
