Lithium Universe Launches Second Lithium Refinery in Texas
- Brownsville, Texas site under evaluation can accommodate two lithium carbonate refinery trains and PV recycling operations
- Leverages proven Jiangour refinery design from Quebec project, with modifications for Gulf Coast conditions
- Diversified feedstock plan using U.S., Brazilian, and African spodumene supplies
Lithium Universe Limited (ASX: LU7) is pleased to announce the launch of a second lithium refinery strategy at Brownsville, Texas. Building on the success of its Becancour Lithium Refinery Project in Quebec, LU7 now positions itself to establish a twin-plant refining platform across Canada and the United States. By expanding into Texas, LU7 reinforces its mission to close the 'Lithium Conversion Gap'--the critical shortage of refining capacity in North America. The Brownsville PV Recycling site under evaluation is large enough to accommodate two lithium carbonate refinery trains alongside recycling operations. The Texas project is structured as a parallel growth pathway to the Quebec refinery, with Quebec serving as the Trans-Atlantic hub and Texas as the U.S. hub. The Brownsville refinery would leverage its deep-water port to import spodumene concentrate from the U.S., Brazil, and Africa. Outbound logistics are also a benefit, with battery-grade lithium carbonate from Brownsville able to be shipped directly to U.S. Gulf Coast, Midwest, and Mexican gigafactories. Brownsville offers advantages like cheaper labour, low capital intensity, streamlined permitting, strong investor appetite, and proximity to Tesla's Corpus Christi refinery. LU7 plans to leverage the proven Jiangsu refinery design from the Quebec project, with modifications for Gulf Coast conditions.
LU7's Brownsville refinery is expected to have a production capacity of 18,270 tonnes per annum of battery-grade lithium carbonate, with the potential to scale up to 36,000+ tonnes per annum with two trains.
LU7's vision is to create a trans-Atlantic refining platform--two projects, one in Quebec and one in Texas--serving North America's rapidly growing demand for lithium. Together, these facilities will cement LU7 as a leader in bridging the Lithium Conversion Gap, supporting electric vehicles, stationary energy storage, and the global clean energy transition.
