Viva Energy provides update on Geelong Refinery fire
- Alkylation unit secured, inspections and preparatory works underway
- RCCU expected to restart in June, production to reach over 90% capacity
- Sufficient fuel stocks maintained to meet customer demand
Viva Energy Group Limited (Viva Energy) has provided an update on the impacts of the fire that occurred at the Geelong Refinery on 15 April 2026. Since the incident, the company has been focused on safely securing the impacted Alkylation unit and isolating it from the rest of the refinery, allowing inspections and preparatory works necessary to restart the Residue Catalytic Cracking Unit (RCCU) to commence. This progress is proceeding well with no impediments identified. Subject to further inspection, Viva Energy currently anticipates that repairs to the impacted units necessary to restart the RCCU will take approximately six weeks, with the RCCU and associated units returning to operation during June. Following the RCCU restart, production is expected to increase to over 90% of capacity. As previously advised, the Geelong Refinery has been producing diesel and jet fuel at approximately 80% of capacity and petrol at approximately 60% while the RCCU is offline. The company continues to have sufficient fuel stocks to cover this reduced production and expects to maintain normal fuel supply to customers throughout this period. Viva Energy is continuing its investigation into the cause of the incident as well as the assessment of damage and duration of repairs. The company has also engaged with its insurers in relation to the incident, including property damage and business interruption.
