BHP Reports Strong Operational Performance in Q2 FY25
Key Points
  • Copper production up 10% driven by record output at Escondida
  • Iron ore shipments reach upper half of FY25 guidance range
  • Steelmaking coal and energy coal production also strong
Full Summary

BHP reported strong underlying operational performance in the first half of FY25, with copper production up 10% and several assets expected to deliver production in the upper half of their respective guidance ranges. Copper volumes rose 10%, driven by a 22% increase at the Escondida mine, which achieved a 10-year production record. This more than offset the impact of a weather-related power outage at Copper SA. WAIO shipped record half-year tonnes through the port, enabled by supply chain improvements following the completion of major debottlenecking. Steelmaking coal tonnes from the BMA operations were up 14%. BHP made further progress on its growth pathways, completing the formation of Vicuña Corp. with Lundin Mining to advance the Filo del Sol and Josemaria copper projects in Argentina. The company's Jansen Stage 1 potash project in Canada is now 63% complete, with first production scheduled for late 2026. In Brazil, Samarco, BHP Brasil and Vale signed a comprehensive settlement agreement with the Brazilian government and public authorities for the Samarco Fundão dam failure. BHP expects its financial results for the first half of FY25 to reflect certain items, including higher-than-expected unit costs at Copper SA and BMA, as well as the impact of the weather-related power outage and the transition of WA Nickel into temporary suspension.

Guidance

For FY25, the Group's copper production guidance remains unchanged at 1,845 - 2,045 kt, with Escondida expected to produce 1,180 - 1,300 kt. Iron ore production guidance is 255 - 265.5 Mt, with WAIO and Samarco both expected to be in the upper half of their respective ranges. Steelmaking coal guidance is 16.5 - 19 Mt (BMA) and energy coal guidance is 13 - 15 Mt (NSWEC), both also in the upper half of the range.
